So I'm considering rolling the circuit back, from v2 to v1 above.  The v1 circuit I have built and verified in the past: it was in the first prototype of this amp.  The v2 circuit is what I have now, which is not working.  That circuit is purely theoretical, my own design but closely based on known-good existing circuits.  There's probably a wiring error -- but so far I can't find it.  By the time I convert the circuitry to v1, I'll probably find and correct the problem, but at least I can be viscerally certain that if I build the v1 circuit, it will definitely work.  If it doesn't work, there's an error somewhere.  With v2, I just can't feel as certain of that.

I'm posting rough copies of the schematics again (just photos), including I think a few minor changes and corrections over the "nicer" copies posted a while ago.  Also, for the four pages comprising the preamp section, I have now made layout diagrams: i.e., slightly re-factored schematics which more clearly suggest how the circuit board and wiring will be laid out.

quick-start guide for the version-1 prototype

McGrath Mini Quick Start Plug guitar cable and power cable into the back. Flip all the switches into the "on" or up positions, except for the fx switch: keep this one down. (back view) 5 switches on, 1 switch off ( fx ). Since this is a tube amp, you'll have to wait a bit for the tubes to warm up, before you can get any sound (around 15-30 seconds).  When the amp is warmed up, the power LED changes from red to purple. Start with all the knobs pointing straight up ("12-oclock position"), except vol : start with this at minimum (full CCW). (front view) Strum a chord on the guitar while gradually turning up vol  until the volume is good. The most important knobs other than vol , in setting the tone of the amp, are the two  gain  knobs.  Experiment with these.  More gain leads to "dirty" or distorted tones; reduce gain for "clean" tones.
